CONFIGURATION CONSIDERATIONS
Engines
Multiple are offered for variety of options in different price ranges and familiarity - all are considered commercial engines from their respective manufacturers, with HP options ranging from 3.2-5.5.
Front accessory
The primary purpose of a front roller is to support the mower by maintaining a consistent height of cut - especially important on/over uneven ground. Rollers can help reenforce the
"stripe" effect after the initial mow, but the front roller's
job is mechanical, not aesthetic. With the Catalyst, the stripe comes from the rear drum drive.
Grooved Roller - Best for:
- wet or soft turf
- newly established lawns
- reducing slippage
- helping to maintain a consistent height of cut
- reducing the roller's contact area
- cool-season grasses (helps with tracking)
Smooth Roller - Best for:
- dry, firm turf
- well-established lawns
- slightly more pronounced stripes (secondary purpose, and dependent on grass
height)
- routine mowing on well-maintained, level areas
- ultra-low cutting heights
- warm-season grasses
Reel
7-blade - Best for:
- low-moderate mowing heights - typically above 1/2" (max. HOC up to 1.2")
- shorter, warm-season grasses such as Bermuda, Zoysia, and bentgrass, etc.
- regular mowing multiple times during the week
10-blade - Best for:
- ultra-low mowing heights under 1/2"
- pool-table smooth lawns
- frequent mowing - daily or close to it
*the 10-blade reel has a 2mm thick bedknife and is more susceptible to damage from imperfections in the lawn.

I own two Mclane reel mowers and two California trimmer reel mowers. The California trimmers are of far better quality and performance. Plus the Trimmers are far easier to lap and adjust the blades when sharpening.
